Class Description:

This immersive workshop invites you to reconnect with yourself through rhythm, movement, and sound. Guided by musician and wellness practitioner Jorge Villanueva, participants use simple drumming and rhythmic exercises to release stress, quiet the mind, and tap into a natural sense of balance and well-being.

You don’t need any musical experience to participate. Jorge’s approach is rooted in the belief that everyone has an innate sense of rhythm. Through guided drumming, percussive improvisation, and gentle call-and-response patterns, you’ll explore how rhythm can help regulate breath, improve focus, and support coordination in a deeply grounding, meditative way.

Beat-based movement has been shown to be especially supportive for individuals navigating Parkinson’s and other movement-related challenges, as rhythmic cues can assist with timing, motor coordination, and body awareness. The workshop is welcoming and adaptable, making it accessible for a wide range of abilities and comfort levels.

The experience blends structured rhythm with moments of creative expression, offering space for emotional release, connection, and play. Many participants leave feeling more centered, energized, and connected — both to themselves and to the group.

This class is ideal for anyone looking to:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Improve focus, coordination, and body awareness

  • Explore rhythm as a wellness and movement tool

  • Engage in creative self-expression in a supportive setting

No prior drumming or music background is required — just curiosity and an openness to explore rhythm as a pathway to well-being.

About the Instructor:

Jorge Villanueva is an innovative wellness practitioner specializing in the use of drums and rhythm as therapeutic tools. He is the founder of Beat Based Movement, a platform rooted in the belief that rhythm is a fundamental part of human life and a powerful pathway to healing, balance, and personal growth.

Born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico, Jorge developed a deep appreciation for cultural and musical diversity at an early age. His journey into rhythm-based wellness began through his lifelong relationship with drums and percussion. He studied music at the Orquesta de Baja California and the Los Angeles College of Music, building a foundation that blends technical mastery with intuitive expression.

A GRAMMY Award nominee, Jorge has captivated audiences worldwide with his unique fusion of drums and hand percussion from across cultures. His work has appeared in film soundtracks, including Matthew Modine’s One Last Score, as well as Netflix productions, documentaries, and commercial projects.

Following his success in the music industry, Jorge expanded his work into wellness and mental health, creating Beat Based Movement to serve diverse communities. His programs support children with autism, adults navigating stress, anxiety, and depression, and older adults seeking cognitive, emotional, and movement-based support. Beat Based Movement sessions are currently offered at wellness and mental health centers throughout Los Angeles County, including Los Angeles Outpatient Center, The Meadowglade, Beachside Teen Treatment Center, Hillcrest Adolescent Treatment Center, and more.

Beat Based Movement group sessions are offered year-round in Culver City at These Hands Collective.
