Course Description:

Your Creative Familiar

Have you ever felt particularly drawn to a certain animal, pet, or mythical creature? Do you find yourself wanting to represent your favorite critter over and over again in the art that you make? If so, then you may have found your creative familiar!

In this workshop, participants will learn about the history and cultural significance of "the familiar": a folkloric tradition of connecting with a magical spirit, most often an animal, that works with you as a companion and co-conspirator in your spiritual practice. Artist and art therapist Hannah Schaler will guide you to look inward to your spiritual center, connect with a familiar, and conjure imagery that illustrates the power of that connection.

Using motifs from traditional folk art, participants will craft an image of their familiar. Don't worry! You *do not* need to be able to draw animals to enjoy this workshop, though we can offer some one-to-one drawing instruction if you'd like to flex your skills. Participants will be using collage, drawing tools, and paint to assemble a fairy-tale image of animal-human connection. You will head home with one (or more) completed works on paper or canvas.

About the Artist:

Hannah Schaler is a local artist and art therapist with a dual background in the arts and fitness/wellness. For her entire life, she has walked the line between arts and sciences, always wondering how it all fits together and what the heck it all means?! Hannah completed her AA in Studio Art at Florida State University, BA in Art History from the University of Florida, and MA in Art Therapy from Loyola Marymount University. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and has taught yoga and mindfulness for more than 14 years. Her personal art practice mixes mediums such as on fibers, paint, drawing to create large-scale images that confront systems of oppression in our society. She has a private art therapy practice in Santa Monica, and she spends her down time singing along to Broadway, sewing garments, or playing tennis.
